Steven Hendee is currently the Director of Orchestras and Bands at Castro Valley High School. Prior to joining the CVHS faculty he served 12 years as the Director of Bands at San Francisco Unified School District’s prestigious School of the Arts (SOTA).
Outside of the classroom Steve is an active member of the California Music Education Association. He has held numerous board positions at both the regional and state level including Bay Section President (2010-2012) and State Vice President (2014-16).
A highly skilled conductor and clinician, he has lead honor bands through out California including San Luis Obispo County, Fremont Unified School District and San Francisco Unified. Mr. Hendee has also taught summer ensembles at Cazadero Performing Arts Camp and Hayward La Honda Music Camp.
Mr. Hendee received his bachelor’s degree and teaching credential from California State University, Hayward where he studied with Tim Smith, Dave Eshelman, Jay Rizzetto, and Marvin Nelson. A Fremont native, Mr. Hendee is a 1987 alumnus of Mission San José High School and attended both Hopkins Jr. High School and Gomes Elementary School. When not on the conductors podium he enjoys spending time with his wife Sharon and daughters Emiko and Kimiye.
Sharon Hendee (violin, viola) is a faculty member of the Dominican Sisters School of Music and has more than 25 years teaching experience. She holds a BA in Music from Cal State East Bay (CSUH) where she studied with Nathan Rubin. She has freelanced with many of the Bay Area’s regional orchestras and performed regularly in recital with the Chamberlain String Quartet. Sharon has coached chamber music students at San Francisco State University as assistant to the Alexander String Quartet and at Cal State East Bay as a member of the University’s quartet-in-residence. She is a member of the American String Teacher’s Association and the Music Teacher’s Association of California.
